AKC (2025, July 10). About the Breed.

The Australian Shepherd, a lean and resilient ranch dog, represents a classic 'only in America' tale: a European breed refined in California via Australia. Regulars on the rodeo scene, they are strongly linked to the cowboy lifestyle. As the cowboy's preferred herding dog, the Australian Shepherd is a medium-sized worker known for its sharp, intense gaze. Their coats come in various styles, including merle (a mottled pattern with contrasting shades of blue or red). In every aspect, they embody the image of rugged and agile stock movers. Aussies have a compelling instinct to herd anything: birds, dogs, children. This strong work drive can make Aussies overwhelming for a sedentary pet owner. They are exceptionally intelligent and can easily outsmart an inexperienced owner. In short, they aren't the ideal pet for everyone. However, if you're seeking a smart, tireless, and trainable companion for work or sport, your search might end here.
